Mahanoy City demonstrates a governance focus on managing post-industrial decline through blight remediation and infrastructure improvements, with notable efforts including Kaiers Park Phase III enhancements and an active demolition program funded through dedicated tax allocations and CDBG grants. The 2024 fiscal performance shows healthy municipal finances with a $624,936 General Fund balance and revenues exceeding budget (101%), though Real Estate Tax collection fell short at 89.8% of projections, reflecting ongoing population and economic challenges. Recurring themes include property management and redevelopment (multiple demolition and improvement projects), public participation in regional planning, and careful budget stewardship to sustain services in a municipality that has declined from approximately 16,000 residents (1910) to 3,912 (2021). The governance structure involves coordinated planning across township and borough entities, with reliance on state and federal grants to fund capital improvements and blight remediation initiatives essential to the community's stabilization.

The Wyoming County Planning Commission held its August 20, 2025 meeting with eight members present to discuss county planning matters. Falls Township is considering rescinding its own Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance (SALDO) and transferring administrative and plan-approval authority to the County, effective December 31, 2025, while retaining its own Zoning Ordinance and Zoning Officer. This change would move Falls Township from one of five municipalities with independent SALDO authority to joining the 18 municipalities that operate under the County's SALDO.
